As China’s influence in Latin America grows, attention is increasingly turning to China’s economic objectives in the region. Questions are emerging about the role of Latin America in China’s development: What is China’s long-term economic policy for the region? How important is Latin America to China’s growth?

To address those questions, the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) will sponsor a half-day conference on September 16, 2011 in Los Angeles, California, titled, “China in Latin America: The New Economic Frontier.” The aim of the conference, organized by the Institute of the Americas, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the USC Marshall School of Business, is to foster an open and frank dialogue between business leaders, academics and researchers from China, the United States and Latin America..

The first panel will address the strengthening business ties between China and Latin America. The second panel will address economic and political policies and will be focused on questions raised by the academic community. Business leaders and the academic community are invited to attend both sessions. Topics for discussion include the China-U.S.-Latin America relationship in this new economic era; Latin America’s evolving economic dialogue with Chi na; and Sino-Latin American relations: Present and Future.
