2011 Student Research Symposium

March 4-5, 2011

On behalf of the University Research Council’s Student Research Committee, we are pleased to announce the dates for the 2011 SDSU Student Research Symposium. All SDSU students are invited to participate in this exciting event.

The Student Research Symposium is a two-day event to recognize the outstanding scholarly accomplishments of SDSU students. The SRS provides a public forum where SDSU students will present their research, scholarship, or creative activities.

Presentations will be organized by academic disciplines with divisions for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.

SDSU students may submit an application to present either preliminary or completed results from their original research.

Haitian Creole Language Instruction Opportunity

Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University is currently accepting applications for its 13th Annual Haitian Summer Institute in Miami, Florida. The Institute features intensive language training in Haitian Creole at both the Beginning/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced levels, as well as a Haitian Studies Seminar Series and a FLAC Lecture Series.

The program is FLAS-approved.

Eligible non-FIU students who are interested in enrolling in the Institute are invited to apply for FIU FLAS Fellowships in Haitian Creole by contacting Joanne Virgille, Coordinator, LACC Academic Programs at jvirg001@fiu.edu Students are encouraged to apply ASAP.

Graduate Equity Fellowship Program

Application Deadline: September 20, 2010

The Graduate Equity Fellowship is a California grant program administered by Graduate and Research Affairs. Award amounts range from $500 to $4,500 per year for up to four semesters.

Qualification Guidelines
California resident
Enrolled fulltime (minimum 9 units a semester) as a classified, conditionally classified, or certificate-program student
Maintains a 3.00 GPA
Economically disadvantaged – Need to show a minimum of $1000 in financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships
Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
A brief essay

Latin American Studies Internships-FALL 2010

Mixteco Cultural Exchange Program: In San Diego Teach English or Spanish to Indigenous Mixteco Adults

Provide tutoring and educational activities to Mixteco youths

This is a great opportunity to learn about the Mixteco culture, practice your Spanish, and gain practical experience in language instruction.

Requirements: Must be available to teach on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings in Linda Vista from 5:30-8:30 and help with cultural workshops on two Saturdays over the course of the semester. Knowledge of some Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Unaccompanied Minors Shelter Program: In El Cajon and Lemon Grove

Teach life skills and provide educational and recreational activities to refugee minors while they await reunification with their families in the U.S or abroad.

Learn first hand about the experience of youths who have immigrated to the U.S. alone, while helping them learn about American culture and practicing your Spanish.

Requirements: Must be 21 years old and commit to working both fall and spring semesters. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Earn 3 units of credit through Latin American Studies or your major department

Indigenous farm workers in California

Here is the link to an excellent web page with comprehensive data on indigenous farm workers in California. It includes data on various regions of California and on the communities in Mexico from whence the workers come. A significant proportion of these workers are from Oaxaca.

The website is one result of a 2 ½ year study of indigenous farm workers in California. The site is in English and Spanish
