Arturo Sarukhan Ambassador of Mexico to the United StatesA career Foreign Service Officer in the Mexican Foreign Service, Arturo Sarukhan became Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States in 2007. Sarukhan is generally regarded as the most effective and active Latin American ambassador in Washington. Last month, he scored a diplomatic coup by setting up a meeting between President Felipe Calderón and Barack Obama, the first meeting conducted by the incoming U.S. president with a foreign head of state. Sarukhan is also credited with successfully lobbying the U.S. Congress to approve the Merida Initiative, which is providing hundreds of millions of dollars in assistance to Mexico’s anti-narcot! ics efforts.
