Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a leader of Mexico’s left and the founder of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), is calling on PRD lawmakers to propose alternatives to President Felipe Calderon’s energy reform that will allow Mexico to confront the challenges posed by declining petroleum production. Cárdenas, the son of President Lazaro Cárdenas who nationalized the oil industry in 1938, contends that Calderon’s energy reform violates the Mexican Constitution. That concern has prompted Cárdenas to urge political leaders to negotiate solutions to the looming energy crisis.
