Ambassador José Goñi became Chile’s Ambassador to the United States in April, 2009. Prior to his appointment, he served as Chile’s Minister of Defense (2007-2009), and was Ambassador of Chile to Mexico (2006-2007), Italy (2000-2004) and Sweden (1997-2000). Mr. Goñi was the Chilean representative at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and at the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). He was also Director for Europe of the General Directorate for International Economic Affairs (DIRECON); head of the team assigned to negotiate the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (1995-1996); and director of the Stockholm branch of the Chilean Promotion Office (PROCHILE) for Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland.
Mr. Goñi has published two books: Olof Palme and Latin America, Editorial Azul, Montevideo (1986), and Desarrollo con Equidad, Editorial Nueva Sociedad, Caracas (1988). He is currently writing a novel and a selection of short stories.
