A documentary film presented by the Center for Latin American Studies, Chicana/o Studies Department, and the Foundation for Change
The border city of Tijuana, Mexico is experiencing a crisis of unprecedented violence and ungovernability, this situation affects the daily lives of its inhabitants. Every week, a group of people get together in Tijuaneados Anonymous to share experiences and discuss solutions to the erosive phenomenon that affects the tijuaneado.
Join us for a post-screening discussion with the film’s directors Jose Luis Figueroa and Ana Paola Rodriguez. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Dr Weisz is a professor at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico where he has tought for thirty years. He is a recipient of the Fulbright Grant and has lectured in several countries including England, France, Holland, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, and the United States.

Urgent Humanitarian Aid Needed for Mudslide Victims in Tlahuitoltepec Oaxaca
The Bi-national Indigenous Front is seeking economic assistance for those affected by the September, 28th mudslides.

Also, a group of chefs from various restaurants will participate in «a Taste of Mexico,» a special dinner to collect donations. The event will be held October 8th at 7:30 at the Restaurant Guelaguetza at 3014 W. Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles.

Author Talk featuring Paul J. Vanderwood and Satan’s Playground
Satan’s Playground chronicles the rise and fall of the tumultuous and lucrative gambling industry that developed just south of the U.S.-Mexico border in the early twentieth century. As prohibitions against liquor, horse racing, gambling, and prostitution swept the United States, the vice industry flourished in and around Tijuana, to the extent that reformers came to call the town «Satan’s Playground,» unintentionally increasing its licentious allure.

RMCLAS 2011 Annual Conference
The 58th Annual Conference of the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Wednesday, April 6 through Saturday, April 9, 2011.
The RMCLAS Program Committee is now accepting panel and paper proposals on general topics in Latin American Studies.

Haitian Creole Language Instruction Opportunity
Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University is currently accepting applications for its 13th Annual Haitian Summer Institute in Miami, Florida. The Institute features intensive language training in Haitian Creole at both the Beginning/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced levels, as well as a Haitian Studies Seminar Series and a FLAC Lecture Series.
The program is FLAS-approved.

The Trans-Border Institute at the University of San Diego Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies is pleased to announce three new opportunities for students and volunteers in the 2010-11 academic year:
volunteers to help with our conference on Proposition 19 on 10/14;
a research project to help monitor the effects of drug violence in Mexico (an initiative of the Justice in Mexico Project);
a research project to help examine the phenomenon of «spillover» violence (in collaboration with the Congressional Research Service and the National Defense Intelligence College).

Indigenous farm workers in California
Here is the link to an excellent web page with comprehensive data on indigenous farm workers in California. It includes data on various regions of California and on the communities in Mexico from whence the workers come. A significant proportion of these workers are from Oaxaca.
The website is one result of a 2 ½ year study of indigenous farm workers in California. The site is in English and Spanish.
