Gabriel Silva Luján, Ambassador Of Colombia To The United States The U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement will go into effect on May 15, clearing the way for increased trade between the two countries. During the April 14-15 Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, President Obama spoke of the “strategic alliance” between the two countries as Colombia’s consumer market rapidly expands and the country undertakes new infrastructure projects. On April 14-15, leaders of the Western Hemisphere’s democracies met in Cartagena, Colombia, for the Sixth Summit of the Americas. John Feeley was there and can answer questions about the tiffs over Cuba and the Falklands as well as the close ties that were cemented between the United states and Colombia. Feeley, the U.S. State Department’s Summit Coordinator, was part of the inner circle and will share the inside scoop on the Summit and tell us what was significant and what wasn’t — a nd how the Summit will impact the nations of the Western Hemisphere. Discussant: Nancy Postero, UC San Diego Associate Professor of Anthropology

María Teresa Sierra is a Visiting Fellow at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and is a professor at the Center for Advanced Studies and Research in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in Mexico City. She obtained her PhD in Sociology from the University Paris VIII St. Denis-Vincennes, France. Professor Sierra specializes in legal and political anthropology and in the study of ethnicity, multiculturalism and gender. She is a founding member of the Red Latinoamericana de Antropología Jurídica (RELAJU) and was its president in 2006 when she organized its VI Congress in Mexico. She is a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers since 1987 and of the Mexican Academy of Science since 2007. Currently she participates in a collaborative project Women and law in Latin America justice, secuirity, and legal pluralism, coordinated by Rachel Sieder. Her research is on the role of indigenous women facing justice and community security in the same area in Guerrero.
