Come explore “Native Peoples of Mexico: A Glimpse of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, and Nahua Cultures,” a fascinating exhibit presented by SDSU’s Center for Latin American Studies. 

The Latin American Studies Department created “cultural discovery boxes” to educate K-12 level school children about Mexico’s four largest ancient indigenous communities through the introduction of everyday objects. The artifacts contained in the cultural discovery boxes—which are all on display—are available on a loan basis to educators following the exhibition.  Although these boxes were put together with school children in mind, their artifacts will intrigue adults as well. Please join us in witnessing the emergence of extraordinary cultures through the exploration of everyday objects.

Rene Zenteno is Undersecretary for Population, Migration and Religious Affairs at Secretary of Interior. Prior to joining the Secretary of Interior he served as provost and professor of sociology and demography at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF). He has been Executive Director of the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California San Diego. He has received numerous honors and fellowships, including President of Sociedad Mexicana de Demografía and membership in the National Academy of Science of Mexico. He has been a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers since 1992, a distinction awarded only to the best national scholars. During his tenure as a professor at the Tecnologico de Monterrey, he was awarded the chair in «Economic Integration and Social Development,» in 2003, and the «Outstanding Teaching and Research Award,» in 2005. He has published widely in the areas of social and demographic change, international migration, and social inequality, with a focus on Mexico, U.S.-Mexican migration, and Mexican immigrant incorporation. He obtained his MA in demography from El Colegio de Mexico in 1988 and his PhD in sociology and demography from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995. From 1996 to 1998 he undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania.

Tijuana: perspectives of the city on film

El Colegio de la Frontera Norte through the Directorate General for Education, Laboratory for Cultural Projects of students of the Master in Cultural Studies, the Institute of Culture of Baja California and the Faculty of Humanities of the Autonomous University of Baja California invite the first forum of film analysis, Tijuana: Prospects for the city in film.

In his first issue, the objective of the Forum Film Analysis (Facina) is to open a space for discussion and provide new visions and purpose to the old debate about the image of this city approached from an artistic point of view and ideological as it is film. The Facina include lectures, thematic panels and projection analysis of feature film. Will include the participation of analysts and experts.

The forum will be held September 30 and October 1, 2011 at the Institute of Culture of Baja California (ICBC) *, Zona Rio, Tijuana.Ambos days will be held at the Multiforo activities and working sessions in the Hall ICBC terrace.

Strengthening environmental management in California school

El Colegio de la Frontera Norte and SEMARNAT through the Department of Urban Studies and Environment and EcoPark Project will conduct a Training Workshop for teachers on Climate Change September 12 to October 10 from 8:00 to 12:00.

The course is entitled: Strengthening environmental management school in Baja California and aims to train 50 teachers in upper primary and secondary education. It will last 20 hours, spread over 5 sessions of 4 hours each.

Events will take place in the classroom and ecological Ecoparque will for the first session with the participation of the Director of Environmental Education Training Center for Sustainable Development CECADESU-SEMARNAT, the rest of the sessions will be delivered by leading experts in the the theme of Colef and other higher education institutions in the region.

Over the course-workshop aims to train teachers in order to fortalcer school environmental management and support awareness of environmental stewardship, with particular emphasis on global warming, water disposal, reforestation, and production patterns consumption and other problems are major challenges in the field.

MÉXICO: 58% DE LOS HOGARES TIENE MASCOTAS
ENCUESTA NACIONAL EN VIVIENDAS

En casi 6 de cada 10 viviendas (58%) de México reportan la existencia de al menos una mascota, cualquiera que esta sea.

La presencia de mascotas en el hogar parece no correlacionarse con el nivel socioeconómico de la vivienda, ya que los tres niveles que desglosamos poseen una proporción parecida. Por regiones, destaca la presencia de mascotas en el centro del país donde llega al 63%.

Por mucho, la mascota más presente en los hogares mexicanos es el perro, 84% de los hogares que tienen mascotas (lo que significa el 48% de todos los hogares) dicen tener un perro, muy por arriba del 30% de gatos y 27% de algún tipo de ave.

La convivencia de perros y gatos en la misma casa no es un caso extraño, el 22% de los hogares que reportan mascota (13% del total de hogares) dicen tener a los dos tipos de mascota.

Los estratos económicos altos muestran menos presencia por gatos y aves pero incrementan su relación con perros y peces.

La zona rural es más afín a tener tanto perros, gatos, aves e incluso un 6% reporta roedores, en cambio peces y tortugas son más comunes en zonas urbanas.

Por regiones, el sureste destaca por una relativa mayor presencia de gatos y a cambio el norte por un mayor gusto por casi todo tipo de mascotas.
