Social inequity and lack of opportunity pushed Carlos Zeferino Torreblanca into politics, a career that began in the local branches of the National Chamber of Industry (CANACO) and the Confederation of Business Owners in Mexico (COPARMEX). In 1993, after refusing several invitations to participate in state government, Mr. Torreblanca ran for Mayor of Acapulco on the leftist Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) ticket. In 1994 he won a seat as Federal Deputy in the Mexican Congress with a campaign based on business issues, finance reform, and tourism promotion (he served again as Federal Deputy in the LVIX Legislature from 2003-2005). In 1999, Mr. Torreblanca was elected Mayor of the City of Acapulco. Then, in 2004, he won the PRD candidacy for governor. His term ends in 2011.
Governor Torreblanca is a public accountant and has served in numerous positions in the Canaco-Servytur in Acapulco and nationally. He has also served as business representative in! the Adv isory Commission of the National Institute for Housing Development (Infonavit), and in various other public capacities in finance plus economic and business development.
