Born in Sonora, MANLIO FABIO BELTRONES is a Mexican senator and presides over the
Senate’s political coordination committee. He was a federal congressman in the 52nd Legislature (1982-1985), a senator during the 54th Legislature (1988), and a federal congressman during the 59th legislature (2003), where he served as coordinator of congressional representatives belonging to the Popular Sector, a faction of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Beltrones served as governor of Sonora from 1991-1997. He was also designated general secretary of the National Confederation of Popular Organizations (CNOP by its Spanish name) in 2002.

Beltrones, who earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the   National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), later taught Economics at his alma mater. His political career began in 1977, at the age of 25, when he served as private secretary to the Undersecretary of the
Interior Ministry.
